Health History

Prospective broodmares should be assessed for their ability to become pregnant, successfully carry the pregnancy to term and produce a healthy foal. Health of the mare prior to pregnancy will influence the outcome of a pregnancy.

Areas to consider are:

Conformation: hoof & leg, joint disorders, pelvic injuries/abnormalities, Over/ under shot jaw May effect ability of mare to carry pregnancy. Jaw abnormalities (parrot mouth) and leg abnormalities may be heritable.

Genetic disorders: Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP), overo lethal white syndrome (OLWS), Glycogen branching enzyme deficiency (GBED), Severe combined immunodificiendy (SCID),
Junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB)
more information

Genetic tests exist for these diseases. Mares and stallions should be tested if the possibility of these diseases exist in the breeding stock- may influence choice of stallion to avoid effected (unhealthy) foal.
Mares should be current on vaccinations before breeding and foaling. Special immunizations may be required for EVA or other management concerns
Diseases like Cushings, laminitis, EVA (or other STDs) may effect fertility and management
History of fertility, past reproductive problems (STDs, abortions, twinning), current estrus cycle information may help with special management.
