Applied Anatomy- Reproductive Exam of the Mare

The Mare exam is essential in the efficient management of the broodmare. At the beginning of the breeding season (or after foaling), the broodmare should be examined to determine general and reproductive health. Consultation with the veterinarian early in the season may eliminate costly and time consuming problems which decrease mare fertility.

The exam should include:

  • Identification information (tatoos, brands, chips, registration #, description)
  • Age: Young mares may have abnormal cycles, aged mares may be harder to get pregnant
  • Immediate past use: Use of hormones with athletic performance may inhibit fertility
  • General management information (weight, body condition score, feeding/worming program, farrier program)
  • Health history (vaccination/immunization record, dental record, serological testing record, illnesses/ accidents)
  • Reproductive history (estrous records, breeding records, foalings, abortions, twinning)
  • Reproductive status (estrus record for current season, plan for breeding)
  • General Health Exam (TPR, lameness, genetic diseases, etc)
  • Reproductive Exam:
    • External genetalia
    • Speculum: vagina, cervix
    • Palpation / Ultrasound
    • Uterine cytology, culture & biopsy
