Objective: The objectives of this laboratory are to:

1. Learn how to teach the stallion to collect on a phantom
2. Learn how to store semen for cooling and shipping.
3. Review insemination doses.

Terminology: There is some terminology that we must get straight in order to communicate effectively

• Phantom- The device used for the stallion to mount when collecting with an AV, that is similar in height and girth to a mare. The phantom does not need a "head" and can be bought commercially or made with a water heater / log or anything else that is sturdy enough for the stallion to mount.
• Centrifugation- Centrifugation "pulls" cells and particles to the bottom of the tube by increasing the g force by centrifugal force (like keeping water in the pail that you swing in a circle over your head). The amount of force is determined by the speed and the diameter of the rotation.
• Equitainer- Semen storage and shipping container. This device is designed to cool the semen at a set rate and hold the temperature for 24-48 hr.

Laboratory Activities:

1. Training the Stallion to Phantom: You will watch movies which document the training of two stallions.
