Techniques for Cooling Equine Spermatozoa

Many people are interested in using cooled semen for artificial insemination. Cooled semen refers to semen which is cooled to refrigerator temperature (5°C or 40°F). This semen can then be stored at that temperature and then inseminated up to 24 - 48 hours later. This storage time means that at least within the U.S., semen can be sent via overnight delivery to any location. There are a variety of things you must understand about the cooling process and limitations on use of the semen for you to successfully inseminate and get mares pregnant with cooled semen.
