Pregnancy Management: Twins

The following is a scan of a day 14 pregnancy. Two embryonic vesicles were found: 21 and 24 mm. The scan shows the veterinarian pinching the smaller vesicle between the wall of the uterus and the ultrasound probe.

Mare: Lady, 3/14/06

The smaller vesicle is manipulated so that it is away from the vesicle to be saved. The veterinarian uses the ultrasound probe to "pop" the smaller vesicle.

As you can see, it take alot of pressure to break the vesicle. The vesicle becomes very misshapen before it ruptures. When the fluid becomes irregular where the smaller vesicle was, the veterinarian makes sure that the other vesicle is intact. (notice the cyst in the uterine horn above [more toward the oviduct] the smaller vesicle)

When does the veterinarian try to reduce a twin pregnancy?
After the endometrial cups are formed
Day 12-16
While the embryos are in the oviduct
After fixation

Congratulations, you are done with lab.
