Pregnancy Detection

The following is a scan of a day 48 pregnancy. Look for the heartbeat, spine, and limb buds. If removed from the mare this could be clearly recognized to be a developing horse and not some other species. It is therefore called a fetus from here on out.

Characteristics of the embryo:

distinct head and body
limb buds visible
heart beat clearly visible
umbilicus present from the abdominal area close to the rear limb buds.
the amnion is visible as a sac that surrounds the fetus.
