Short Cycling Mares with PGF2a

One management scheme is to decrease the intervals between estrus. This scheme can be used if:

  • a breeding is missed on a mare
  • the mare is late in the breeding season
  • a mare has a uterine infection and you want to bring the mare into estrus so the cervix will open and the uterus can drain
  • a mare has a persistent CL and does not come into estrus
  • a pseudopregnant mare

In a cycling mare, remember that PGF2a can only produce satisfactory results if given on days 5 - 12 of the estrous cycle. In the other cases above, if a CL is present upon palpation, PGF2a is then given. Additionally PGF2a can be given to a mare 5 days after the end of foal heat to shorten the diestrus interval so the mare can be bred quicker.
