Horses in the northern hemisphere have a natural cycle in which they come into estrus during the period of April - October. Humans have decided however that they want to impose a breeding season from February - June for most horses. This decision has to do with the age of any horse being based on January 1 of that year. Horses born earlier in the year have competitive advantages in racing or show ring competitions.
