Estrus Prevention

Preventing estrus is important for some horse owners. Treatment with progesterone (ReguMate) daily for 15 to 60 days has no long term bad effects and is very effective in preventing estrus. However, if the mare has a history of uterine infections, this treatment is not recommended as progesterone will enhance uterine infections.

Treatment should begin 3 days prior to the target date or event in which the mare will compete and the owner does not want the mare in estrus. The mare will come into estrus 3-4 days after the withdrawal of the progesterone.
