Progesterone DeficiencyProgesterone insufficiency during early pregnancy (day 12) has been correlated to early embryonic death. Whether the cause of the insufficiency is from premature luteolysis or primary luteal insufficiency has not been established. Failure of maternal recognition of pregnancy is suspected in mares which continually fail to become pregnant and can be treated by giving exogenous progesterone. Treatment: Give Regumate daily (1cc /100# body weight) until day 100-120. At this time the placenta will make sufficient progesterone to maintain pregnancy. cost: $3 - $10 per day |
