Foal Heat Breeding

Foal heat occurs 5-12 days after parturition and is accompanied by ovulation on days 9-12. Mares which ovulate after day 10 have a higher conception rate since the uterus has time to become ready to support the embryo. The success of breeding on foal heat depends on the individual mare and the "health" of the uterus but is usually 10-20% lower than on subsequent ovulations. There is no clear indication of increased early embryonic death.

Fresh and cooled semen give comparable pregnancy rates but frozen semen should not be used as results are significantly lower.
