Uterus

The myometrium has an outer layer of longitudinal muscle and an inner layer of muscle which circles around the uterus. The two layers of muscle are needed for peristaltic contractions that are directional. The muscles of the myometrium are important in the variation of uterine tone during the cycle, enlargement of the uterus during pregnancy and the propulsion of the fetus during birth.
