The Scrotum

scrotal temperature of stallion testes

The testes are located within the scrotum. The image to the left is a thermographic image taken from the left side of the stallion scrotum. The lowest temperature is seen in the lower right of the image. Body temperature of the stallion is approx. 38°C. The arrows indicate the location of the body wall. The dark blue area is where the epididymis is located and the green to tan area surrounding it is where the left testis is located. What is important is that the testis is maintained in the scrotum at below body temperature. This is essential for normal sperm production. If a stallion becomes injured in the scrotal area, it is important to put on ice or hose down with cold water as soon as possible. If swelling and inflamation occurs, the testis temperature will increase and will damage sperm production. Normal sperm may not be produced for 60 days and an entire breeding season may be lost.
