Applied Anatomy and Behavior of the Stallion
Objective: The objectives of this laboratory are to:
- Understand the anatomy of the stallion and how this contributes to production of fertile sperm.
- Perform a breeding soundness exam on a stallion.
- Observe behavior and handling of a stallion.
- Observe the castration procedure and its effects on the male equine.
Before continuing with the lab the first week of this lab, be sure to review the lecture on Anatomy of the Stallion. The second week review the lecture on Reproductive Soundness Exams in the Stallion. You can look at the lecture on Sexual Behavior and Performance of a Stallion at a latter time for background material related to lab.
Terminology: There is some terminology that we must get straight in order to communicate effectively
- Cryptorchid (bilateral or unilateral) - an individual in which either both or only one of the testes descends into the scrotum. Usually this occurs within 2 weeks of birth in the male equine.
- Castration - the removal of the testis and usually the epididymis. This results in the male horse being called a gelding.
