Behavior

Stallion behavior can be very intimidating to handlers who are not used to handling stallions. You will view short clips and read the explanations of normal and abnormal stallion behavior. Handling stallion during teasing and collection is an art. The handler must allow the stallion to exhibit normal stallion behavior without becoming dangerous to the handler, mares or himself. Handling a stallion for breeding is not the same as handling a stallion for showing or normal procedures (grooming, farrier, vet, etc). Correcting a stallion for small infractions of behavior during teasing and collection may distract the stallion from his job of getting an erection, mounting and ejaculating. A good stallion handler knows what behaviors to expect from a stallion and how and when the stallion should be disciplined.

Normal Stallion Teasing and Collection

In this movie, you see a well trained stallion that is easy to handle although he does strike to the front and kick with both hind feet during teasing. The handler is aware of this behavior and handles the stallion so that he is not directly in front of the stallion. The stallion is calm when asked to move away from the mare, while his penis is being washed and easy to handle when approaching the phantom for collection.

*The student does lose part of the ejaculate during collection because of the position of the AV.
