Methods of Estrus Detection

To detect estrus in a mare will require access to a stallion on a routine basis. The method of estrus detection (teasing) used will then depend on:

  • the facilities available
  • the number of mares to be observed
  • the type of mares to be observed: virgin, nursing a foal, performance
Methods of Teasing (click links to see an example or a movie if available; black and white photos are from a variety of Colorado State University publications)
Tease Chute Good for large number of mares.
Can't tease lactating mares with foals
Tease Rail Good when less than 50 mares on farm, individual teasing
Stall Teasing Stallion needs access to mare's head
Pen Teasing
view movie
Can kick and injure either mare or stallion
Metal pens are more dangerous than wood pens

Paddock Teasing
(restrained, loose)
