Estrus Behavior

cyclic estrous behavior intensity of estrous over the cycle

The behavior of the mare is cyclic. As the estrus behaviors of winking, tail raising and squatting are increasing, the nonreceptive behaviors such as ears back and kicking are decreasing. The opposite then occurs as the mare switches from estrus to diestrus behavior. The change from diestrus to estrus behavior is rapid, it may take 1 to 2 days to reach the maximal intensity of estrual behavior.
