Artificial Insemination of the Mare

Insemination Procedure

  1. Check records on the mare. An ultrasound exam of the mare may be used to determine breeding status.
  1. Prepare the mare: Place mare in stocks, wrap and tie up tail.
  1. Wash the external genitalia and buttocks of the mare with gentle soap and water (Ivory soap works well). Use your knuckles to scrub the mare. Rinse. Repeat two more times.
  1. Wipe the washed area with a paper towel starting from the external genitalia and wiping out. Use the towel only once.
  1. Put shoulder-length sleeve on and attach syringe to breeding catheter.
  1. Aspirate 5ml of air into the syringe and then aspirate semen into the breeding catheter. Place the tip of the catheter in the palm of the gloved hand.
