Pregnancy Monitoring

Early embryonic death occurs frequently (10-20%) during the first 50 days. Stress, illness, uterine infections, hormonal abnormalities and twins are some of the causes of the early loss. Monitoring the pregnancy 14-16 days post ovulation allows the veterinarian to manage twins by reduction. Having the pregnancy reconfirmed at 45, 60 and 90 days in addition to monitoring estrus behavior allows the owner to be confident in the pregnancy.

Neither teasing, rectal palpation nor ultrasound has been shown to endanger the pregnancy.
