Embryo Transfer: Selection of the Recipient Mare

Recipient mares should be selected on the ability to complete the gestation. A complete breeding soundness exam should be done before choosing the recipient (rectal palpation, ultrasound, uterine biopsy, culture and cytology):

  • Young (3-10 yrs)
  • Good health, gaining weight
  • Normal reproductive cycles
  • No history of reproductive problems
  • Should be the same size or larger than the donor

It is critical that adequate records be kept on the recipient and that she have permanent identification (brand, tattoo, chip).

At the time of transfer, the mare should have at least a 30 cm CL, no fluid in the tract, tight cervix and tubular uterus.
