Embryo Transfer

Embryos can be transfered into the recipient mare non-surgically or surgically. The surgical procedure is a standing flank incision with local anesthesia. The embryo is placed into the uterine horn by puncturing the horn. The more common procedure is a non-surgical, transcervical transfer. The cervix is dilated with a finger and the ET transfer pipette passed through the cervix into the uterus. Care should be taken so that the finger does not pass into the uterus- only the pipette should pass into the uterus. Conception rate will improve if a sheath protector is used until the pipette is in the cervix.
