Satin - Saddlebred Mare - Foaling 5/13/2005

Stage 1

The mare was previous washed in the vulva region The mare during this stage appears nervous, walking around the stall. She stands with her rump to the wall and paws and lifts back legs when contractions occur. She also lifts her tail or turns around and look at her flank when contractions are occurring. The mare rolls at 44 minutes before birth in an attempt to reposition the foal for delivery.

Stage 2

This stage begins with the breaking of the water 10 minutes before birth. You can also see the mare becoming more nervous, increased contractions, and sweating. The mare repeatedly stands up and lays down between contractions. Notice the waxing on the mare's udder when she is laying down. The foal is unable to breaks the amnion itself during the final part of delivery. The mare and foal lay quietly.

Stage 3

This stage begins after the foal is delivered. The mare has been laying down and we did not disturbed her. An observer enters to remove the placenta from the foal's head. The mare and foal lay down for more than a half hour. During this time the mare has been having contractions. The mare stands up but the placenta remains in the mare and is tied up. The foal stands up 16 minutes after birth but the mare is still trying to deliver the placenta and stands up and lays down a number of times without allowing the foal to nurse. Attendants then held the mare so that the foal can nurse at 45 minutes after birth. At 2.25 hours after birth, 20 IU of oxytocin is given. The placenta was delivered at 3 hours after birth.
