General Information

Parturition can be divided into 3 stages:

• Stage 1 - myometrial contractions (uterine muscle contractions)
• Stage 2 - Expulsion of the fetus
• Stage 3 - Expulsion of the placenta

On each of the subsequent pages you will be able to examine video clips of mares during the 3 stages of parturition. All movies are mares that were bred and foaled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison facilities. Some of these movies are quite large and may take a while to download if you do not have a fast internet connection. Each mare behaves differently so be sure to look for the behaviors noted in the text. You may also have to listen carefully to the sound to hear some of the events.
