Lab 3: Hormone Manipulation and Artificial Insemination

Objective: The objectives of this laboratory are to:

1. Become familiar with the use of Ultrasound in reproductive management of mare.
   
2. Become familiar with the drugs and management systems used to control estrus in mares. You will read the material and view videos to determine the best management of several examples.
   
3. Learn how to do artificial insemination in the mare.

Before continuing with the laboratory, be sure to review the Hormone Manipulation and Fertility and Artificial Insemination lecture material.

Terminology: There is some terminology that we must get straight in order to communicate effectively

• Ultrasound: the use of high frequency sound waves to observe structures in the body. Commonly used to visualize soft tissue structures such as follicles and CLs on the ovary, the uterus and embryos and fetuses in the uterus.
  

Laboratory Activities:

1. Ultrasound: You will learn how ultrasound works and how to use this tool in managing the mare's reproductive cycle.
   
2. Hormone Manipulation: You will become familiar with the ways to manipulate the mare's reproductive cycle with hormones.
   
3. You will view a video clip that explains how to inseminate a mare.
