Training tips and common problems

Training tips

  • Set aside time specifically for training, BEFORE you need semen
  • Bumping the stallion's chest against the phantom may stimulate a "reflex mount"
  • If the stallion seems ready to mount, but hesitates, stimulate the penis by placing the artificial vagina on the glans. This often causes the stallion to mount
  • Impairing the stallion's vision with blinkers or blinders so he's not distracted
  • Get the artificial vagina in place as calmly and quickly as possible can keep the stallion mounted and thrusting
  • Don't remove the AV while the glans penis is flared
  • Don't rush the stallion to dismount after ejaculation
  • The first couple mounts may be in weird directions, but once ejaculation occurs, subsequent mounts are usually better. Remember that perfection is not required.

Common Problems

Low Libido, easily distracted

  • Expose to many mares to find mare he likes
  • Test for testosterone level; treat with GnRH
  • Previous bad experiences
  • Allow stallion to watch other stallions at work
  • Season/age
  • Overworked?
  • Blinders

Dismount at Onset of Ejaculation, Incomplete Intromission, Lack of Pelvic Thrust

  • Previous bad experiences
  • AV not properly prepared: check temperature, pressure, lubrication
  • Pain: have stallion examined for back, hock, stifle, penis injury
  • Phantom height and comfort
  • Footing

Repeated intromission but no ejaculation

  • AV not properly prepared: check temperature, pressure, lubrication
  • Does stallion need pressure on glans penis
  • change tease/mount mare
  • try apomorphine to lower ejaculation threshold
