Sexual Stimulation
In other species increasing the sexual stimulation will increase the number of sperm in an ejaculate. To evaluate this in the stallion, males on a 3 time/week collection schedule were sometimes teased with 14 mares before collection. Some of the results are shown in the table below:

There was no change due to teasing in the number of sperm collected. However the volume of the ejaculate increased when teasing prior to semen collection was done. If semen is to be shipped, it may not be desirable to tease a stallion more than what is required to achieve an erection, wash the penis and elicit an ejaculation. Although not shown above, the only advantage to pre-teasing a stallion was a decreased time to erection from 1 minute to 30 seconds. This may prove to be useful only for a stallion that has problems achieving an erection.
