Hormone Manipulation: Case 1
So you ordered semen today (2/24) and you plan to breed tomorrow (2/25).
Sorry, your mare did not get pregnant.
- If the mare has a 14 day diestrus, she will come into estrus on 2/25.
- On average, mares ovulate on day 5 - 7 after the start of estrus, estrus lasting from 6 - 8 days. The rate of follicular growth is variable, between 2 and 3 mm/day. It would take the larger of the two follicles 5 to 7 days to reach an ovulatory size of 42 mm.
- This mare does have 2 possible follicles that may ovulate if both continue to grow so she may ovulate at a smaller size than usual suggesting she might ovulate in 3 - 5 days.
- When you order the semen the semen provider will want to know if you want fresh or cooled semen. The fresh semen will need counter-counter air shipment and the cooled with require overnight transport. We have not talked yet about cooled semen so lets consider on the fresh semen. If you get it tomorrow, then the semen will not survive long enough for ovulation to occur.
- Additional treatment with HCG to induce ovulation is not possible today as the follicles are less than the required 35 mm.
Go back and consider the other alternative.
