Vagina and Cervix

D. In the left image is an enlarged image of just the vaginal portion of the tract you have just cut open. Note that the vagina can be separated into two parts:

  • Anterior Vagina (cranial vagina)
  • Posterior Vagina (caudal vagina, vestibule)

The separation is delineated by the change in color and texture. There are distinct differences in the epithelial cells in these two regions as well.

E. In the right image is an enlarged image of the cervix. The cervix of the pig is composed of the:

  • External Cervical Os
  • Internal Cervical Os
  • Interdigitating Prominences

The anterior boundry of the cervix is the uterine body and the posterior boundry is the anterior vagina. In some species the cervix extends into the anterior vagina to form a pocket know as the fornix (see cow anatomy/Cervix). The pig however does not have a fornix.
