Identify the caruncles as shown in the picture. These are the areas where the placenta will attach to the uterus.

The uterus itself is composed of three layers. The outer or serosa layer is called the perimetrium. the muscle or muscularis layer is called the myometrium. The inner mucosa + submucosa comprise the endometrium.
