Pig AI

Approximately 95% of sows and gilts are bred with AI in 2018. This has increased with the size of herd starting in the mid to late 1990's.

Advantages:

  • Use of genetically superior sires
  • Decrease in total number of boars kept (principle reason in 2018)
  • Can be used to develop a closed herd
  • Save time when breeding a synchronized group
  • Allows crossbreeding programs in commercial herds
  • Encourages good record keeping
  • Able to detect subfertile boars

Limitations:

  • Requires a higher level of management and some training
  • Requires more labor: twice daily heat detection, sanitation of equipment
  • Requires insemination be done at the correct time with the correct procedure
  • Undiluted semen should be used within 2 hours, extended semen can be stored for 3-7 days
  • Fertility level of frozen semen is lower than with fresh semen or natural mating
  • Sanitation is essential

Timing of AI

  • Gilts - 12 and 24 hours after first seen in estrus
  • Sows - 24 and 36 hours after first seen in estrus
