Animal Science 434 - Histology - Fall 2022

Objectives:

  1. Examine the microscopic anatomy of the male and female reproductive systems.
  2. Connect structure with function on a microscopic scale.
  3. Learn about leptospirosis, its diagnosis and prevention.

Laboratory Activities:

  1. Get ready for lab: You will review the basics of cell structure and function.
  2. Introductory histology and micro-anatomy: You will examine whatt a histological section represents and epithelial cell types.
  3. Histology examination of the male: You will examine the histology of the male reproductive tract. In addition to basic anatomy of the tract you should also be able to identify in any section, epithelial cell type, muscle cells, blood vessels, adipose cells and connective tissue.
  4. Histology examination of the female: You will examine the histology of the female reproductive tract. As with the male tract, you should be able to identify the cell and tissue types in any histological section.
  5. Leptospirosis: Examine the consequences and prevention of this disease.
  6. Pig Breeding and Estrus Detection: You will breed pigs this week and should examine this material.
  7. Canine breeding and AI: Examine this information on when and how you would breed a Bitch with either natural service, AI with cooled semen, or AI with frozen-thawed semen.
