If the legal holidays of January 1, July 4, or December 25 fall on a Sunday, University offices are closed on the following day (Monday) and the holiday is observed on that Monday.

If any of the other legal holidays fall on a regularly scheduled day off (such as Saturday or Sunday) employees are granted floating holiday time.

Granting of Floating Holiday Time
Floating Holiday time is allocated to the employee during the pay period in which the holiday falls and will appear on the next leave or earnings statement.

Using the Floating Holiday Time
Floating holiday time can be used any time in the calendar year in which earned. If used before the holiday occurs, the balance will appear as a negative number on the earnings statement and in the leave accounting system.

Classified employees cannot use the January 1 floating holiday time until the year it earned. Unclassified employees can use the January 1 holiday time before it occurs.

Legal and floating holiday hours should be used in the calendar year in which they are granted. There are no provisions that allow classified employees to carryover floating holiday time into the next calendar year. Thus, individuals should use their floating holiday time before using vacation time.

Leave Accounting System Notes
The classified and unclassified leave accounting systems differ in the way they operate--classified leave accounting is based on a calendar year and unclassified leave accounting is based on a fiscal year.

The classified leave accounting system DOES NOT automatically drop the unused floating holiday hours.

The classified leave accounting system DOES NOT allow entry of the January 1 floating holiday as "Used" until after January 1.

The unclassified leave accounting system DOES automatically drop unused floating holiday hours after June 30.

The unclassified leave accounting system DOES allow entry of the January 1 floating holiday as “used” prior to January 1.
