Basis for the UW – Equine Semen Calculation Excel Spreadsheet

The UW – Equine Semen Calculations Excel spreadsheet is free for use by anyone.  The calculations are based on the following assumptions:

Fresh Semen Insemination

• The initial dilution of semen is 1:1 regardless of sperm concentration. Sperm are then placed on the counter or in a thermos.
• After determining sperm concentration, the spreadsheet calculates how much additional extender would need to be added to achieve an insemination volume of 10 ml and 500 X 10^6 motile sperm in the insemination dose.
• If after the initial 1:1 dilution an insemination volume of greater than 10 ml is required, the volume of 1:1 semen will be indicated and the volume of extender will be 0.

Cooled Semen Dilutions:

• If your stallion produces less than 75 x 10^6 sperm/ml in the ejaculate you will need to concentrate the semen prior to using this spread sheet.
• The initial dilution of semen is 1:3 (semen:extender) regardless of sperm concentration.  Sperm are then placed on the counter.
• After determining sperm concentration, the spreadsheet calculates how much of the 1:3 diluted semen and additional extender would need to achieve a sperm concentration of 50 X 10^6/ml and an insemination dose of 1 Billion sperm.
