Lab 1 Disease - Trichomoniasis

This week we will be investigating Trichomoniasis. There is a general portion of the website devoted to diseases that can be reached using the LABS link in navigation and then looking for:

Reproductive Diseases of Production Animals

Review the material on Trichomoniasis provided in the class website and then aswer the following questions. You may need to discuss this with someone familar with the specific species.

  1. What type of organisms are Trichomonads such as Trichomonas fetus and Trichomonas vaginalis? In what animal species are these 2 species of Trichomonads present.

  2. Trichomoniasis in cattle can be controlled by artificial insemination. What does this tell you about the disease and why would it be more common in beef rather than dairy cattle? Further what do we do with an infected bull?

  3. How does symptoms of Trichomoniasis differ between humans and cattle. Historically as Animal Scientists focused on livestock production, we have been most concerned with role of Trichomoniasis in cattle. Why should we be concerned with Trichomoniasis in other species?
