Minutes after foal is born.

Foal being dried by student. Note the umbilical chord is still attached to mother.

Angel slippers on the hooves of the foal protect the mother from damage by hooves. These fall off within minutes of birth.

Foal umbilical chord is still attached to mother. The mother is resting and has not yet gotten up.

Even before the foal stands we dipped the navel with iodine.

Mare has yet to rise and the placenta is still visible coming out the vulva.

Tying of the placenta with twine so that the mare does not step on it. The placenta has yet to be delivered at this time.

The delivered placenta is spread out to exam for any tears or damaged parts. The entire placenta was delivered. At the bottom right is where the foal came through the placenta. The pink or purple tissue represents the allanto-chorion while the white tissue at the center bottom is the amnion. It is the breaking of the allanto-chorion that is termed breaking of the water.

Helping the foal to stand.
