Beef Cattle Nutrition Unit |
The purpose of these units is to accommodate reserach and teaching activities related to finishing beef cattle. This units are located on the Arlington Agriculatural Research Station which is 20 miles north of campus. The Beef Cattle Nutrition unit is a semi-confiment building open on the south side. The facility has two Harvestor units, three stave silos, bulk bins, and mixing equipment which allow for feeding total mixed rations (TMRs). A complete working facility includes a hydraulic squeeze chute with load cells for collection of weight data, ultrasound information, and processing of cattle. The barn was constructed in 1969 and has 24 group (6hd/pen) pens and 48 individual animal pens. This unit has been utilized by numerous faculty members and was the site for Dr. Schaefer's vitamin E supplementation research. Current research continues to focus on nutritionally related topics and dairy beef production. This facility is also the site for the World Beef Expo Fed-Steer Futurity contest that was started in 1995. The contest provides performacne and carcass information to producers who consign a pen of five steers. |
The second unit is the Beef Physiology, which was built in 1963. This unit consists of pastures and confinement lots. The Unit is currently being used for Dr Lehmkuhler's research on grazing. |
