Arial Farm Photo Lancaster Experiment Station

The Lancaster Research Station is strategically located in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin. The topography of the station includes a high proportion of erodible land and thus provides an ideal setting for sustainable agricultural research involving ruminants and forages. Currently the primary research thrust at the station is focused on the development and efficiencies of a sustainable Single Calving Heifer system (SCH). The SCH differs from traditional cow/calf systems by producing but one calf (or twins) from a female, then routing her toward slaughter for meat while the progeny is cycled as the next generation for reproduction. The research program is extensive and includes investigators representing a) agricultural economics, b) agronomy, c) animal breeding and genetics, d) animal health and management, e) meat science and muscle biology, f) reproductive physiology and g) ruminant nutrition.
