Direct Marketing of Lamb

Fresh Lamb to Supermarkets Steve Pinnow, Sheep Producer and Marketer, Delavan, WI

Biographical Information: Steve Pinnow Steve & Darlene Pinnow started to seriously focus on direct marketing of lamb in January 1998. They established the brand name "Pinn-Oak Ridge Farm". The focus is on fresh, wholesome lamb delivered to retail stores on a weekly basis. Currently they service 21 stores in Eastern Wisconsin.

Retail consumers may also visit Pinn-Oak Ridge Farm's website www.wisconsinlamb.com. Online consumers may purchase fresh Wisconsin lamb retail cuts along with processed products like brats, summer sausage and breakfast links that include 3/4 lamb and 1/4 pork. New products are constantly being developed.

Steve and Darlene are concentrating their community efforts in the Milwaukee urban area. Pinn-Oak Ridge Farm is involved with the S.H.A.R.E. Program and the Growing Power Co-op. Both programs bring quality Wisconsin farm products to all groups of people.

At home, they will be lambing 200 brockle-face ewes in four groups for 2001, in order to help support the year-round need for fresh lamb in the stores they service. Rotational grazing is used for the ewe flock with a confinement setup for finishing the lambs.

Steve was recently appointed to the Wisconsin Livestock & Meat Marketing Board.

Processed Lamb Product David Erb, Sheep Producer and Marketer, Hillsdale, WI

Biographical Information: David Erb lives in Hillsdale, Wisconsin. He has been raising commercial Dorset sheep for 12 years. David is a founding member of the Indianhead Sheep Breeders Association and has been on the planning committee for the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Conference for several years. David won the ISBA's Extra Mile award in 1996 and Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative's Master Shepherd Award in 1998.

He has been direct marketing his lamb for many years, and in 1996 he developed his own private label called Erb's Classics. He started with a summer sausage, after that he added a summer sausage snack stick, and he recently expanded with a BBQ flavored snack stick.
